Nothing Lasts Forever

.!.

One of the prospects contacted us demanding permanent links. In fact many of our clients ask us this question – “How long would the link last.”

People who are looking to increase the link popularity of their website would like to acquire links of eternal lifespan. But do link lasts forever? Well…. the answer is Yes as well as No.

It all depends on the source you have linked from. If you have linked from directories, articles or blog sites, webmasters may tend to keep it for a long time or may be keep it permanently. However, if the link is placed on a general webpage, we have experienced that webmasters remove it now or then. There may be various reason of doing so and I would like to discuss the same.

A pen, till it is efficient of writing is caressed for. We take care of it by keeping them near by or at safe a place so that we are aware of where could we find it. We even flash them on our shirt pocket or hang them around our neck. But the day it is devoid of ink, we either dispose it or replace it with another. Same goes with link. Link may be removed by a webmaster when it has given all the benefit to him/her.

Sometimes webmasters tend to change the theme or content of the page and the link may not be thematically relevant the page; hence, the removal. A classic example would be the movie review sites that come up with evaluated feedback every week. The new release “Twilight” would urge the review site to flash links related to the movie. However, after some it would lose relevance in terms of freshness. The site would like to replace the links with the more relevant ones that is related with the recent Movie flick.

Google PR updates… a horror and a reason to many, to replace the links. Google heavily relies on both inbound and outbound links to establish credibility and importance of a web site. During PR update, Google might use historical information to further specify the value of the links like the following:

• Appearance and disappearance of a link over time.
• Anchor text and the discovery date of links.
• Link growth is constant or slow.
• Many more reasons could be there.

And the above reasons may tempt or force a webmaster to remove the link.

One more reason could be the number of outbound links. As the number increases the webmaster don’t get value out of those links. However, as the time comes for PR update webmaster tend to lessen down the number to save their page from loosing PR.

Whatever may be the reason, we all know that links plays an important role to enhance and build authority of a website. So we would keep linking. However, now when we have learnt these little secrets, let’s do it in a smart way. Happy linking to all :) download Mean Creek

Too bad nothing last forever. I would like to think most individuals would keep that link up for the life of the page or website. Even the best websites eventually shut down.
