Targeting Links That Complement SEO
Links are developed to separate a website from the hordes of competitors who are vying for the same SERP (search engine result page) positions. In link building, sooner or later we need to look at link values as what links are passing links juice and what are not.
Usually we target quality websites to develop links for SEO. Quality is measured from on page theme (relevance), website contents, page rank, linking codes (no-follow, java script) and also the number of outbound links on that page. These are the parameters that everyone follows in link building. However, there are few other parameters that often overlooked by most of the people but get more priority in search engine algorithm. These parameters are:
Authority of Linking Domain: When a site is linked to an old and trusted domain, that link provides more value than a link from a site that is less popular and trusted. Age of linking domain matters as old domain offers trust. A link from an aged website (online over 5 years) can do more than a page rank 6 link as trust will elevate your entire site, whereas a PR6 link will just provide you with a boost for targeted key phrase.
IP Diversity:
There are webmasters having a lot of websites and domain names and they normally host it in one web server. What they do to increase their search engine ranking is they interlink these websites to increase number of backlinks.
To prevent such webmasters from manipulating the search result with this technique, Google gives more preference if the links come from different C-class IP addresses. With such algorithm placed, webmasters who interlink their websites would be ranked lower if compared to sites where link come from different IP addresses (or different web servers).The point being, we need IP diversity (links from a variety of sources) to provide the appropriate signals to search engines, in addition to mapping out the appropriate link velocity.
Crawl rate of website: Getting links from sites that add contents frequently is another way to rank higher in short span of time. Google have a tendency to crawl fresh contents that benefits the links added on that page. Links on dynamic pages get indexed earlier than static pages. Though, it is imperative to analyze the crawl rate of website before putting links there.
A bottom line is, link building for SEO is not just about quality and quantity, it is also about the authority of the domain, the crawl rate on the site, and IP diversity.
